OSI model का पूरा नाम (ओपन सिस्टम इंटरकनेक्शन ) Open Systems Interconnection है इसे International Organization for Standardization ( ISO ) ने 1978 में develop किया था और इस model में 7 layers होती है।

OSI model किसी network में दो यूज़र्स के मध्य communication के लिए एक reference model है। OSI model की प्रत्येक layer दूसरे layer पर depend नही रहती है लेकिन एक layer से दूसरे layer में data का transmission होता है।

OSI model यह describe करता है कि किसी network में data या information कैसे send तथा receive होती है। OSI मॉडल के प्रत्येक layers का अपना अलग अलग काम होता है जिससे कि data एक system से दूसरे system तक आसानी से पहुँच सके।

OSI model यह भी describe करता है कि network hardware तथा software एक दूसरे के साथ layer के रूप में कैसे work करते है।

यह layer physical तथा electrical connection के लिए responsible रहता है जैसे:- वोल्टेज, डेटा रेट्स आदि।

Physical layer में digital signal, इलेक्ट्रिकल सिग्नल में बदल जाता है।

इस layer में network की topology अर्थात layout of network(नेटवर्क का आकार) का कार्य भी होता है।

फिज़िकल लेयर यह भी describe करती है कि कम्युनिकेशन wireless होगा या फिर wired होगा ।

इसके functions निम्नलिखित हैं :

• physical layer यह define करती है कि दो या दो से ज्यादा डिवाइसेस आपस में physically कैसे कनेक्ट होती है.
• यह layer specify करती है कि नेटवर्क में दो डिवाइसेस के बीच transmission mode (simplex, half-duple, या फिर full duplex ) कौन सा होगा ।
• यह information को transmit करने वाले signal को decide करता है.

data link layer, OSI MODEL में नीचे से second number की layer है। इस layer की दो sub-layers होती है

• MAC(media access control)
• LLC(logic link control)

इस layer में network layer द्वारा भेजे गए डेटा के packets को decode तथा encode किया जाता है तथा यह लेयर यह भी ensure करता है कि data के ये packets त्रुटि रहित हो।

इस लेयर को frame unit भी कहा जाता है। इस layer में Data transmission के लिए दो प्रोटोकॉल प्रयोग होते है.

Data link layer के functions निम्नलखित हैं

• यह लेयर, physical raw bit stream को packets में translate करती है. इन packets को हम frames कहा जाता है. और यह layer इन frames में header और trailer को include करती है.
• इसका main कार्य flow control करना है. इसमें receiver एवं transmitter दोनों तरफ से एक fixed data rate को maintain किया जाता है. जिससे कि कोई भी data corrupt ना हो.
• यह error को भी control करता है. इसमें trailer के साथ CRC (cyclic redundancy check) को add किया जाता है जिससे data में कोई error ना आये.
